Introducing "Soft" and 25 word pitch

Simon Ellis- Award winning film 'Soft"

A man sets out to buy a pint of milk from the corner shop but gets involved in a tiff will a gang. walking home the man is followed close behind. reaching home his son confesses he was involved in a fight which happens to be the same gang the man was involved in a tiff with earlier.
outside the front door/ window the create noise and disturbance to the family not wanting to retaliate the dad denies to fight back then eventually he goes outside. But does he get his revenge?

Watching Simon Ellis award winning film "SOFT", was a great starting point because it shows how one general idea could possibly have more than one idea based around it for example although the film was about a boy looking up to his father as a role model others may think it was about the relationship between a father and son or even how bullying has evolved from just children to adults as well.
The short film shows a clear understanding for,
  • Goal
  • Problem
  • Change.

Breaking a story down into a 25 word pitch:

Taking your idea and shortening it down to 25 gripping words thats used to pitch or story idea to anyone interested making them wanting to finding out more- like a blurb on a book or the brief reading at the back of a DVD cover.

25 word pitch should include:

  • setting of the scene
  • Tells the audience the man characters
  • shows the problems
Taking soft as an example;

"A realistic drama of a timid father and son relationship that gets challenged will a class rivalry dispute."
 I used a story i found on the news to create my own 25 word interpretation as a starting point for my own story...

  Baby killed by baggage carousel in spain.

My pitch;
  " A tragic tale of how a mothers mistake in an Airport could lead to her own baby's misfortune."

Group work "The Meeting"

Working in groups we were set a task to produce a short short story with the two characters and location we picked from a hat.
From the many choice out group had

  • A bank robber
  • and a serial dater
our location was
  • An empty church hall
we brainstormed different options in which the story could have taken us keeping in mind the
Goal, Problem and Change structure,

In order to get a rough idea on how to create a good story, as a class we watched "witness" and "crash". They style of theses movies are written in completely different ways but the structure in which the incidents were presented never change. they all started with a goal, there became a problem and in the end the characters changed, some physically others mentally.

WITNESS (1985)

                                                                    CRASH (2004)
